Love is…

It’s always amazing to me how God sends us signs just at the right moment. It’s always right when we need it. Whether we see it immediately or not.

Sometimes I think He has a humor that has lots of irony in it. Because it’s always ironic when I get a sign.

For example, the first chapter in my new devotional, “100 Favorite Bible Verses” is based on love. The Bible verse that goes along with it is a classic,

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

What makes it so ironic and so the Lord showing me a sign is that a friend of mine gave me this devotional for my birthday this past weekend. We had had a falling out a year and a half ago. We both had let our feelings get the best of us and we allowed ourselves to hurt each other. Something that really in the grand scheme of things is not in either our nature.

But the silver lining to this irony is this: we have chosen LOVE and have forgiven one another. Because LOVE keeps no record of being wronged. It endures through every circumstance. Our friendship endured a pretty big beating even when we  both thought it would never get a second chance. But because our Lord in Heaven forgives us even though we are so unworthy of that forgiveness, we too can forgive others. We can let LOVE guide our actions. We can stop keeping record of those who have done us wrong and instead throw the scoreboard away. We can choose to be patient and kind instead of proud or rude.

I’m thankful that a few weeks before my birthday and before my gift, both my friend and I decided to put down our swords and shake hands. I’m glad we both put LOVE before one another and we can now rebuild our friendship with a new foundation that is better than ever before.

God knows what He is doing and shows us signs before we even realize it.

Love is the answer.
